Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

I prefer receive negative criticism than none

Hello TazX.
I'm new to the forum. I've only been doing customs since the start of the year.
Nice work on the alien.

One thing I noticed is that I think I see a fingerprint on one or more of the rivets of the suit.
I read somewhere else that you can use a q-tip with alcohol to smooth out things like fingerprints on the clay. Haven't tried it myself. Hope this helps.

I really like the suit, but for some reason I'm not really feeling the face.

Im going to agree with hypnotic on this one. I dig the suit alot, but something about the face, especially from a side view just doesnt fit the theme. Although I know its a rusty alien....the face just doesnt match the rest. As far as the suit goes I dont think I need to critique that considering you seem to have it down with your techniques of painting and sculpt in the sense of getting ti to appear as forged metal and weathered.

Yep, that is what I think as well. Seems like a lot of work has been put into the suit but the face didn't get the same amount of effort/time?

I think I'm gonna go opposite with this...
I like the concept of the alien in the suit. I think the face and hands sticking out of the suit are a nice touch to something creative and I think they look fine. For me, the suit part looks sloppy. The front of the suit looks nice. Nice cut and rivet placement. The patch/plates are a nice touch. I like the silver cuffs and use of color. But then I look at the back and the cuts are all out of whack and the rivets are all different sizes and shapes. The tube is a nice touch, but it's bent at the top and all messy around the base. Overall, just looking at the front I think this is one of your better pieces. Practice makes perfect and keep on sharing your creations here and hopefully you'll pick up some tips.

Hi all !
I've been out these days and so do not say anything before, apologies.
Let´s go, I was impressed that just the face, which was the part I liked most was the few who liked it :D
The idea of the face is just simple, seem a hybrid creature.
Let's say that the face was 90% similar to what I imagined. The problem is that most times it's hard to spend what we think, without explaining it. Normal.
As for armor, the direction and cuts off the rivets with various sizes are intentional, however much it may look lie this story hehehe ...
The idea is that what is really an oldt armor, widely used and therefore totally rebuilt and patched with scrap available.
Outside it is not sloppy, but spends battle.
I thank all the tips and, surely, they will be very useful in my future work !

The suit is super cool. But there is just something not working with the face. It may be the pink.
