Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

This board is what I actually need because I needs improvement. Below is what is probably my best (relative term) piece to date.

In case it is hard to tell I have real tough time getting clean lines with a brush (I have condition that gives my hands a significant tremor at all times). Getting the quality above is nothing short of a miracle for someone with my crap hands but I am sure that there are techniques that I am not aware of that could help. I did try making stencils out of tape which is was provided the somewhat cleaner lines on the piece below.

Just ignore the sculpting on this one. I used Magic-sculpt instead of sculpey and was totally unaware of sandpaper's use.
Please help me! I need to get better if I'm going to remain this obsessed with customizing.

Those are actually pretty clean. Really like the second one.

Are you on a beta blocker for your tremor?

I've never really had anyone consider medication for it. It's an essential tremor. It consists of hand-shakiness and intense pain when the hands are used for too long for something like writing or in my case painting. I was only diagnosed recently and nobody seemed to be talking about possible treatments.

If you have a physical condition that makes it difficult to paint clean lines, my advice would be: don't try to paint clean lines! I love the uber-tight clean lines of guys like Grimsheep, Reactor-88 etc, but the awesome drybrushing work of guys like Leecifer and Southerndrawl is just as beautiful.

Claude Monet's eyesight went to shit and he created Impressionism. Play to your strengths.

I have trouble painting clean lines as well. I got an airbrush for my birthday so I try to make use of it with masking off areas which helps in places.

I agree with that.

In fact, I really like the second one because of the textural quality of the brushwork. Also, I think that where it appears that you masked with a stencil turned out nice.

So as gomi says, play to your strengths and go ahead and mask/stencil where you really feel you need to tighten things up.
