I am pretty new to the whole art toy deal. I started out doing single piece resin cast sculptures for the hot rod crowd and have evolved into this.

Not sure if it would be classified as a Kaiju or not. I am still really new to the terminology. I have been working on a sketch of something big for a few months. Trying to figure out what would I would buy. Most of my art I really do for myself and if other people like it or want to buy it then that is just a bonus. I am running a bit of a contest for naming this beast. Deadline is January 15, 2011 at 11:59 PM central time. You can find out more about it here: http://www.defiancespeedshop.com/?p=534

I picked up some Apoxie Sculpt and have been getting used to how to work best with it. I have found that I have to work one area at a time because it can sag a bit if you are using it too thick.

I will be updating this thread as I make progress on this sculpt. I plan on getting this character sculpted this month (Jan 2011). So I can cast it in March.

Here are some pics of my progress so far...
Image

Creating the core out of tifoil
Image

Encased core. I left it to dry at this phase. The great thing about Apoxie Sculpt is that it dries rock hard and super durable. This wont shatter if I drop it like my Super Sculpt Firm does.
Image

Adding the hips and gut.
Image

Gave him some under arm fat rolls and worked on his mouth last night. The upper and lower lips still need to be built out another 1/2 inch.

Cool. I know absolutely little about sculpting and the tinfoil core is new to me. Learning something new every day. Can't wait to see the rest of the progress.

Diggin the 'Ratfink' look! Have you seen Rob Schwaz's work? He's here in Seattle and does a bundle of this sort of stuff - just based on this piece I'd say you two would get along ;-)

I remember seeing the other post you made of this and I like it. You look like you know how to sculpt and cast very well so execution of your piece will be great. I wouldn't call this Kaiju, Kaiju is Japanese monsters like godzilla, mothra, robots, etc. I look forward to seeing your finished piece in march, I think it's going to do great.

Just had to order more Apoxie Sculpt. Already went through 4lbs of it. I should have made a bigger core! I should have pic updates this weekend on this thing.

FYI - there is still a few more days to submit a monster name to win a hand cast and painted sculpture (shift knob) from me. Go here to read rules and junk. http://www.defiancespeedshop.com/?p=534

UPDATE PHOTOS:
Here the sockets are going in for the shoulders.
Image

reducer ring. They are going to clip in with a barb.
Image

back fat and butt cheeks. You can see how the shoulder sockets are imbedded. The actual socket insert will be removed and cast separately then glued in during actual production so there are no chances of air pockets to make the socket weak or sloppy.
Image

Tongue wire. My apoxie clay was setting fast at this point. I spent a few hours working on the back and mixed up too much clay. So this blob on front is where the tongue attaches. I added wire for support because the clay will want to sag if left unattended.
Image

That is how far I got this week. I have sanded a bit to smooth out some stuff on back so I can see any low spots.

UP NEXT: Mouth and tongue.

Hey man, been trying to get a hold of you but the email on your site doesn't seem to be working. I live right by a kustom kulture gallery here in SoCal that shows a bunch of big name guys but is also always giving breaks to new guys. I mentioned your work to the owner, and he said to have you drop him a line. Real solid guy, and he also publishes a kustom magazine and just opened a second gallery in Japan, so it could be a real nice opportunity to make some great connections. Hit me up with a pm or email me at marktroup [at] gmail.com. I showed the guy who runs the gallery during the week your stuff and he was loving it too. Let me know if you're interested.

I have been working on the tongue. Last night I almost finished it. I just need to smooth out the inside of the cup that the eye sits into. The wire really helped. A couple of days ago I added some meat to the back of his shoulders and filled in the rest of the area around his shoulder sockets. With what I had left over I wrapped the wire. It made the copper really rigid and helped a ton with the actual shape of the tongue. I also added some more meat to the bottom lip. It too is almost finished.

The cloudy areas are where I have been sanding. IT is just a rough sand with a 120 grit right now to knock down the feathered edges and make sure that things are smooth. The final sand will be with a super fine wet/dry paper so I can get a crazy smooth cast from the resin. I also wanted to do this just in case I figure out how to rotocast the body in vinyl at home. Having the master really smooth will help. The arms and feet will still be resin for strength even if I canst the body from something different.

I also found a perfect sized eye, a racketball. It is great to use already found objects because they are more perfectly machined. And I don't have to waste clay trying to roll it and sculpt it into a perfect sphere.

So here you go. Building the shape as it comes out of the mouth.
Image

With the eye on the unsculpted tongue. I have just started doing the definition on the tongue sides in this shot.
Image

Tongue complete except for the inside of cup the eye is sitting in.

Wow, man, this piece is gonna be the shit. Have you thought about pricing at all yet? Kinda putting the cart before the horse, but I'm real curious (ie. interested in picking one up)!
