I think if we keep pushing the limits of what people think is possible, then we'll get the respect that we know this scene deserves. Although we may all be dead by then ;D

I am sure, as with everything, particularly subcultures, that if there is to be any major recognition and acceptance for this kind of art it will take place when it becomes retro.
But, although that sounds sort of depressing in one sense, in another, I like that there is this small, yet world wide, passionate group that is figuring it out together. There is less crap to sort through when everyone cares and is trying to learn from one another.

I really hope one day all of the great customizers here at CTU will be recognized as serious artists, and I'm sure a lot of them will, but I agree that keeping the movement between a small group of friendly enthusiasts is best for now.

I live on a tiny unknown island between France and England, and if it wasn't for CTU and blogs like SpankyStokes, I would have found it really hard to get any kind of following for my work. So for that reason I really like being a part of a small but highly communicative scene like CTU and I do worry that it will break down somewhat when members start to become big names.

...or maybe i just FEAR CHANGE!!!

I'm really interested to know what other CTU member think about this...

...oh, and awesome work Troy Stith, as usual. I didn't mean to hijack your thread!

I know it's been a little while since I've done a western toy custom, but here's the Smash commission that I've been working on finally. Meet "Aplastar"

Aplastar Pass is the gateway to the great kingdom of Veroma. A kingdom renowned for it's grandeur and open hospitality. Yet it's shiny facade soon disappears under the threat of danger. The great monolith 'Aplastar' that guards the waterway, is said to wake and protect the pass. Turning enemy ships into kindling, while at the same time stomping and smashing foes on land. While no survivors have lived to tell the tale of Aplastar, it's legend lives on in the hearts of dastardly sea dogs across the land. The kingdom of Veroma has stood the test of time and will continue to flourish under the watchful fists of Aplastar.

Great job. I think you'r pieces would look awesome with a place to put real water and maybe add a little mechanism to make it move. Like those miniature ornamental cascates.

Thanks you two. Yeah moving water would be cool, but that would have driven the commission price up quite a bit. Plus I would worry that real water splashing on the surroundings over time might ruin them over time.

when i see the grass, the bushes and the green on the smash, tells me you probably used making landscapes for trains/warhammer..

If so you would be familiar with making fake water which looks alive... if you know what i mean...

see:

perhaps something for the next time??
just giving hints...

You're correct about that. I definitely know what you mean and I had debated about adding more rocks and movement into the water, but I decided on the still look. I wanted that stillness because it gives a sense of false calmness if you're an enemy attacker. Almost as if you hit all the rapids and rocks before Aplastar Pass, once you reach the pass the water goes flat and it's smooth sailings to Veroma, well unless you're a scalawag ;)

Either way, I really appreciate the input and the link! I'll definitely file all these thoughts away for the next one :) thanks again!!

That's a cool link, wjlaak01. When I think of making water come alive, I think of the movie "The Science of Sleep".

Hello friends! I know I've been MIA for a stint but that doesn't mean I haven't been working. I've also been busy apartment hunting with my gf and I'm happy to say we've finally got that nailed down. Since we'll be out at SDCC next week and Portland after that, it's been our main priority before leaving. Even though I've been busy with that, I've been working on this commission called The Guardian. Here are some pics from last night before I started drybrushing. I'll have this one wrapped up by the end of the week and I'm hoping to get a few kaiju minis painted up for SDCC. We'll see though, I feel like the past few months have been a blur! Glad to be back though, I've got a lot of catching up to do on here.
