Forum rules

A forum for those artists who would like a more critical critique of their work, apposed to a "that's cool" and a smiley.

A Guide to Positive Critiques (adapted from PoetryPlease)

• Does not solely concentrate on a pieces weak points, but tempers constructive criticism with acknowledgment of the good features.
• Is not made up of comments like “well done” or emoticons, as they do not explain why the piece is well done. Comments and emoticons belong in the introduction and summary only.
• A knowledge of technical artistist terms is desirable, but not necessary, to be able to provide constructive criticism.
• Try to keep your thoughts focused on the piece and how it affects you as the viewer.
• Explain why you liked or disliked the piece; don’t just state the emotion it triggered.
• Describe which elements are good, and how they enhance the piece.
• Describe which elements of the piece need improving and politely offer alternatives that can improve the work.
• Please include an honest, but polite, summary in your critique.

Please remember that even if you do not like a custom, or it has numerous faults, keep your comments polite and positive. Always offer alternatives. To merely tear something down and not offer a better alternative is merely destruction.

By concentrating on the piece, and not the artist, we will help each other improve. By concentrating on form rather than content we not only help other artists, but ourselves as well, by learning where our own weaknesses may lie.

Hmm...I feel I should throw this one into this area before I attempt another custom. I've only been using POSCA paints for my vinyls so far. Reason being I'm not so sure what paints to purchase and I've never been so crash hot with a paint brush.

This is my 2nd attempt at a 4" trikky...I just like cats overal so it's why I keep going for it.

Sorry, man...
Tamiya is the best paint for details that I have used so far. Krylon fusion for plastic is great for spraying big areas, in my opinion. The work I have seen with airbrushes looks the best to me, but I can't speak for them as I do not have one and have never used one (yet) (hopefully soon, though).
As far as your piece, the execution isn't bad at all. You could probably get the wiggle out of your lines by being a little more confident when outlining by using as few strokes as possible. Generally, an easy way to do this is to use your entire arm when making a stroke as opposed to just moving your wrist. Just keep a wet rag on hand to quick wipe away any messed up spots.
I don't know what he is holding. A cigar?
Is that an earring in his ear?
I think you did a good job with the eyes. They definitely convey an exhausted, reproachful look.
Go do another custom. I've been doing this for six months and I've made huge leaps forward in my abilities just by sticking with it (and screwing up a lot of toys).

I like the bold black lines but I think you should start trying out real paint ans get away from the markers. Good paints to start with (as they are cheap) are craft store acrylic paints but for an early custom it is good.

Thanks guys for the feedback! I do really appreciate it.

Yes, holding a cigar but I was mucking around with this new sculpting stuff..It's all paper so I didn't know it's limit. I took this idea from an picture I've drawn in Illustrator and the cigar is really over the top. But I do think as a model it should of been smaller.

On paints...Yes...I do agree, I really should start flexing that idea out. I will try to get on that.
